8 Frames with Eric Uys

What kind of film camera(s) do you use? I have a Canon EOS 50, my first semi pro body and I still love it to bits as it has built in infrared focus assist and I have never ever had focus problems even in pitch black darkness. To this day I am still perplexed as to why they took that out of their camera systems, it was accurate and worked extremely fast. The mind can only be boggled by their stupidity. Then I have a Nikon F100 and my favourite film camera is my Contax 645 with the legendary 80mm f2 lens. The bokeh on that lens has not been matched.

Why do you shoot film? I shoot film because that’s what I started on and nowadays with trigger happy DSLR’s it’s good to be able to slow things down and think for a change instead of just pressing a button and waiting for a little screen to show you what’s going on. It is Just a real pity that the labs in town do not process film like they used to. They just run it on auto even if you ask them not to, they just don’t care and it’s very sad.

Who or What do you love taking photos of? Just about anything under the sun. If you start paying close attention to the world you can find beauty in almost anything and that’s what I look for.

What are you working on at the moment? Just beefing up my portfolio, I feel a bit bored with it.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? From classic art, music and the extraordinary photographer. I tend not to follow or look at any local photographers. I also look at the great photographers of our time. Between Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Howard Schatz there isn’t really anything new under the sun. Combined they have probably covered almost anything you can think of in the fashion industry, everyone else is just a copy of what they have done and accomplished. I recently saw a local model agency rave about some shots a photographer had done, but they were nothing but blatant copies of a shoot Howard did in 1990!

What is the strangest job you have ever had (photography or not)? No comment…

What are you doing when you are not taking photos? I sit in front of my computer editing them.

What is your favourite movie of all times? That’s an impossible question for me to answer, I really don’t have a favourite of anything. I have too many interests to be boxed into one. 2001: A Space Oddessey, Akira, Apocalypse Now, Bram Stokers’ Dracula, The Watchmen, Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock’s) The good, the bad and the ugly, Taxi Driver, The Shining, Aliens, Terminator 2, Back to the Future and Jaws just to name a few of my favourites.
